The Video Platform Offers Viewers Power to Decrease AI-Generated Content in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it now features over 1 billion content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a global launch. This shift comes amid a surge in content created by AI, driven by emerging AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is deemed “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers like content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we want to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as AI-generated. In total, over 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the platform daily, making AI-generated material a minor part of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be in a position to decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they view by opening the content preference setting in the app and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be modified under the setting include politics, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its policies oblige content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans dangerous deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.

Furthermore, the service will henceforth attach an AI-generated tag to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an collaborative effort for recognizing artificial media. This action is designed to stop users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is furthermore launching a $2 million awareness program for experts and groups to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has supported its safety measures, during discussion over plans to lay off a large number of safety staff in the UK. It is expected to cut 439 jobs in its user protection department in its British office, with labor groups and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most graphic content ahead of it has to be seen by people. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
