Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
