Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also included experts in various fields.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
