Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
