Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
