Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
